Milford & Makeney enters the East Midlands in Bloom competition for 2021

Milford & Makeney is to be entered into the East Midlands in Bloom Best Kept Village competition for 2021.

The Blooming Milford group entered the village for this competition in 2011 and 2013, where it gained Silver and Silver Gilt (only just below Gold, the highest) awards respectively. Following the village’s success in 2019, with awards from East Midlands in Bloom (EMIB) for The Triangle on Chevin Road/A6, the floral displays on Milford Social Club, The Bike Shop on the A6 and The Holly Bush in Makeney, Blooming Milford had high hopes when they entered whole village again in 2020. Unfortunately the EMIB competition was cancelled due to the coronavirus. This year, as well as building on the successes of 2019 already mentioned, there are additional highlights since then such as the Milford Community GreenSpace, the Spring Garden and the soon to be planted Community Orchard in Hopping Mill Meadow, so we feel we have a good chance again.

                                 The Triangle – Spring 2019

The route has been decided as follows: Starting at The Social Club on Chevin Road, across to The Triangle, continue down Chevin Road to the A6 then turn left, cross the A6 on the pelican crossing opposite The Strutt Arms, then continue along the A6 and then up Hopping Hill. Go through the churchyard and then up Church Steps and over the ladder to Milford Community GreenSpace. Go back down Church Steps and Hopping Hill, take in The War Memorial then cross the A6 and go through the gap in the wall. Turn left and go along the riverside path as far as the ramp beyond the Riverside Office Park, where the tour will stop. Judging will take place sometime between the 5th and 16th July 2021 and we will alert residents along the route. Nearer the time we will ask for volunteers and help from Belper Town Council to ensure the route is in good condition – tidy and litter and weed free.

Because the village has <1000 population we only have an hour for the tour so we have had to limit the route, but we are allowed to submit a portfolio of photos of gardens and green spaces throughout the year beforehand and in this will definitely focus on areas of the village not covered by the route. Any pictures of your front gardens and streets in bloom this year will be very welcome (before 21st June when the portfolio is submitted) – please send to davidmoretonchevinbrae@gmail.com.  If you also want to help us with the tidy up a couple of days before the judging that will be very welcome too – please use the same e-mail address to get in touch with Blooming Milford.
