Local government
There are currently 3 tiers of local government covering Milford and Makeney, Belper Town Council, Amber Valley Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council, and it is worth knowing their various responsibilities for providing services so you can better target your questions and requests for help. This link provides a handy guide to how services are split between the three bodies. Note, that by 1st April 2028 Amber Valley Borough Council and all the other district councils in Derbyshire, plus Derby City Council, will vanish, along with Derbyshire County Council, and all their services will be run by either of 2 new councils, North Derbyshire and South Derbyshire.
The Amber Valley Borough Council area has been split into two, and we (Belper) will now be part of South Derbyshire Council. This will include the current Derby City Council, Erewash and South Derbyshire councils and the parishes of Belper, Holbrook, Kilburn, Duffield, Horsley, Horsley Woodhouse, Kedleston, Kirk Langley, Mackworth, Mapperley, Quarndon, Shipley and Smalley in the former Amber Valley area. Parishes in the Amber Valley area local to us such as Ripley, Hazelwood, Weston Underwood, Alderwasley, Shottle & Postern, Turnditch and Windley will now go into North Derbyshire. Elections for councillors in the new council will take place in April 2027.
