Meet Nicky Mount – Milford’s Adult Care Coordinator

In January 2017, Nicky Mount began her role as Local Area Coordinator for the communities of Belper South, Duffield, Milford, Makeney and Holbrook.

Local Area Coordination is a community based role, working with people with disabilities, mental health issues, older people and their families and or carers. Nicky will be taking time to get to know people and work with them to help them connect to others in the community, maybe by introducing them to new groups and activities or by helping them to share their skills with others.

Nicky explains more about her work and how she could possibly help members of our community…

‘Local Area Coordination is a way of working that supports people by ‘walking alongside’ them, to help them move towards what they see as a ‘good life’.

Part of my role is to get to know a community thoroughly; what happens when and where and who to go to for different kinds of information. I have started to get to know the communities by visiting local services and attending various groups and activities.

There is no formal process for me to start to work with an individual. Introductions can come directly from the community: people who work in the community; family; carers; or individuals.

So far I have helped people towards a good life by:

  • Involving them in new social activities relating to their interests.
  • Increasing confidence and understanding with Personal Independence Payments (PIP.)
  • Making sense of paperwork relating to becoming a carer.
  • Building confidence in living independently.
  • Helping with decision making about housing.
  • Providing information and advice on a range of local topics such as community transport, luncheon clubs etc.

The ways in which I work are tailored specifically to the needs of each individual.’
