Local government
There are 3 tiers of local government covering Milford and Makeney, Belper Town Council, Amber Valley Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council, and it is worth knowing their various responsibilities for providing services so you can better target your questions and requests for help. This link provides a handy guide to how services are split between the three bodies. Note, that by 2026 Amber Valley Borough Council and all the other district councils in Derbyshire will vanish, along with Derbyshire County Council, and all their services will be run by just 2 new councils, North Derbyshire and South Derbyshire. At the moment it is undecided whether the current Amber Valley council area will be part of North or South Derbyshire, or split between the two, and it is out for consultation by the local population. If you want your say, answer the questionnaire on Derbyshire County Council’s website here – deadline 19th August 2025.
