The A6 was completely closed for traffic during the day from Monday 2nd March 2026 to Wednesday 4th March 2026 from the Children’s Play Area to just beyond the King William. This was obviously a cause of considerable inconvenience for Milford residents – but also a source of fascination – as a truly enormous crane was wheeled into position on the A6 every morning to do its work.
A team of tree surgeons moved along on the cliffs the above the William, Children’s Play Area and the cottages between, over the 3 days, felling trees to make the cliffs more secure. The crane then lifted the felled trees over the top of The King William and the cottages, and then lowered onto the A6 where waiting large shredders reduced the trees to chippings. The videos below give an idea of the bravery of the tree surgeons on the cliffs and the sheer scale of the crane.

Once the work was complete, safety checks were done, and the Children’s Play Area was opened again, apart from a small section. It had been closed since July 2025 when concerns were raised about the safety of the former quarry face at the back of the area.
